In 1887, a large New York tobacco firm named Goodwin & Company produced baseball player cards to promote their Old Judge and Gypsy Queen cigarette brands. Actual player sepia toned photos were pasted on stiff “blank Back” cardboard, not only as a sales incentive, but to protect the cigarettes via the stiff cardboard stock that was used. Currently there are over 3,500 variations known, with up to 20 different images for a single player! One of the most prestigious subjects in this colossal set is the legendary Hall of Famer Pud Galvin. Currently, there are 4 different known poses of this popular Cooperstown inductee with the rarest and most valuable variation being “Galvin In Jacket With Bat In Right Hand At Side”. With that in mind, presented here happens to be that obscure Pud Galvin variation in an absolutely breathtaking SGC 60/5 holder. There are two stories relating to the origin of Hall of Fame hurler “Pud” Galvin’s nickname. One version is that he made “pudding” out of hitters, with the second allegation his weight which eventually ballooned to 320 pounds! Regardless, Galvin ended his career with 361 wins (6th on the all-time list), and a staggering 636 complete games that included almost 6,000 innings pitched! His Old Judge Cigarette card presented here portrays a brilliant sepia toned Galvin image that depicts perfect contrast and registration. No Old Judge photo could possibly surpass this incredible masterpiece, and the print is fully intact! The borders are super clean, and slightly centered towards a left border that exhibits a commonly seen angular cut. Square corners, sharp edging and an astounding clean reverse side complete a breathtaking Pud Galvin example. This museum worthy Galvin masterpiece provides unparalleled visual aesthetics rarely evident on any Old Judge artifact, justifying why any avid 19th century collector should go the distance on this offering!
