The premiums offered by The Sporting Life are among the finest the baseball world has ever seen. The weekly paper was published every Saturday and available at newsstands for a mere 5¢. Powered by the great printers in Philadelphia at the turn of the century, The Sporting Life offered premiums that were indeed premium quality. From highly attractive cabinets to cards that rivaled and often surpassed the fabled T206 in terms of desirability. This Hughie Jennings is no exception. Jennings went from outstanding player to outstanding manager almost overnight. Blessed with a great sense of humor and a love of life, one of Jennings most memorable antics came against Rube Waddell, when the rather zany righty was pitching for the Philadelphia A’s. To divert the attention of the easily distracted Waddell, Jennings brought a pile of children’s toys into the third base box. Waddell couldn’t keep his eyes off the toys and the Tigers pounded the Mackmen, while reports of widespread laughter echoed from the press box.
