The M116 Sporting Life cards are amongst the most brilliant eye appeal cards ever manufactured, enhanced by their stunning palette of pastel colors. These cards were offered to subscribers of the Sporting Life periodical in 24 separate series of 12 cards each. Most of the portrait images depicted on the cards are replicas of the classic Carl Horner photographs including the offered example of the immortal Hall of Fame left hander Rube Waddell. Eccentric to say the least, Waddell’s lifestyle, while short lived (he died from Tuberculosis at the early age of 37), can be described as somewhat flaky and unstable. Legend has it that he would leave the ball park to chase Fire Engines at the sound of their whistles and performed cartwheels on the playing field. Yet he was good enough over an eleven year period to win almost 200 games, lead the league in strikeouts six consecutive seasons (including 349 in 1904) and compile a microscopic 2.16 lifetime E.R.A, a figure that bested even the majestic Walter Johnson! His portrayal on this 1911 masterpiece is outstanding with the distinguished Carl Horner portrait image portraying superior contrast and registration. Waddell chased fire engines even from the playing field itself, and likewise, you would be very wise to bid strong and chase this classic artifact that has defied “Father Time”, with virtually all of its century old attributes preserved!
