Issued in 1913, the 54 card Tom Barker Game set includes the same checklist as the National Game Set, with the only difference being the design of the red and white ornate card backs.  The Tom Barker cards include a bold red & white left-handed player batting image as opposed to the “Base Ball” red & white print on the National Game set.  Of the 54 cards, 43 represent specific player subjects, 9 provide baseball action images and 2 are “rules” and “score” cards.  The offered set includes all 52 graded PSA subjects, and is only missing the “Rules” and “Score’ cards with many hobby purists forgoing those two subjects to justify a complete set. This set is currently registered on the PSA Set Registry as the fifth best set in the hobby due to its remarkable 5.62 Weighted G.P.A.

A classic set that holds a special place in the hearts of vintage enthusiasts due to almost all of the early 20th century legendary Hall of Famers being incorporated in the 43 subjects.  This includes such immortals as Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Tris Speaker, Connie Mack, Walter Johnson, Grover Alexander and many more!  Additionally, three prominent non-Hall of Famers (notables) are included:  Hal Chase, Joe Wood and the iconic and actively sought after “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.  In fact, considering that many stars were inexplicably omitted from various “T” and “E” card sets such as Honus Wagner, Joe Jackson and Walter Johnson, along with the National Game and T5 Pinkerton Cabinet sets, this set qualifies as one of the few issues depicting most of the pre-WWI stars.  There are so many superlatives regarding its subjects with the following just a few to mention:

·        Of the 43 player subjects, a staggering 24 or 56% are Hall of Famers, and if you include the Joe Jackson, Hal Chase, and Joe Wood notables, this ratio increases to 63%!

·        NONE of the cards have been graded less than a PSA 4 with the grading ratio as follows:

Ø  PSA 8 – 12 subjects (23%)

Ø  PSA 7.5 – 2 subjects (4%)

Ø  PSA 7 – 4 subjects (8%)

Ø  PSA 6 – 3 subjects (6%)

Ø  PSA 5 – 17 subjects (32%)

Ø  PSA 4.5 – 1 subject (2%)

Ø  PSA 4 – 13 subjects (25%)

·        Grades for the 24 “Hall of Famers” and 3 “Notables” are as follows:

Ø  PSA 8 – Bresnahan, Chance, Walter Johnson, Nap Lajoie, McGraw, Walsh, Wheat

Ø  PSA 7.5 – Marquard

Ø  PSA 7 – Clarke, Griffith

Ø  PSA 6 – Bender, Honus Wagner

Ø  PSA 5 – Crawford, Jennings, Mathewson, Wood (notable), Cy Young

Ø  PSA 4.5 – Evers

Ø  PSA 4 – Grover Alexander, Baker, Ty Cobb, Chase (notable), Huggins, Joe Jackson (notable), Mack, Speaker, Tinker

·        The set carries the grossly underrated rookie card of the legendary Grover Cleveland Alexander (along with the 1913 National Game).

·        As a promotion for the Fenway brand of beer, some sets included a “Fenway Brewing Co.” red overprint on the box and Frank Baker subject.  This offering’s Frank Baker DOES INCLUDE the scarcer “Fenway Brewing” overprint.  As an additive, the original box has also been included, and although it has seen better days, it likewise includes this tough overprint.

No baseball card set could possibly provide the museum quality aesthetics and elite subjects as this remarkable offering.  Considering the myriad of Hall of Famers, this issue traces back to the origin of our National pastime, providing the vintage collector with an extensive account of the glorified players that assumed a significant role in shaping the game as we know it today.  Additionally, all 52 subjects have withstood the test of time (almost 100 years!), evidenced by their superb images,  sharp edging/corners, clean white borders and fine print registration.  Imagine, more than half the set represents some of our National Pastime’s greatest stars!  Assembling this Cooperstown worthy masterpiece most likely took years, and now, via one “stroke of the key”, one very fortunate bidder will claim its new ownership in a fraction of the time!
