“Sailor Jack” is the only heavyweight to fight both Joe Louis and Jack Dempsey. Sharkey captured the heavyweight title in a controversial decision over the hated Max Schmeling in 1932, only to lose the title a year later to Primo Carnera. After he retired, Sharkey became an accomplished fly fisherman and toured the country with an equally legendary angler, Ted Williams. When asked if he preferred fishing to boxing, Sharkey once quipped, “It doesn’t pay as much, but the fish don’t hit back.”
