One of baseball’s zaniest characters and best clutch pitchers, Gomez was called “Goofy” affectionately to teammates. In the twilight of his career in 1941, Gomez set an unusual record by issuing 11 walks while pitching a complete game shutout. A notoriously bad hitter, Gomez recorded the first RBI in All Star Game history and drove in the winning run in the 1937 World Series. At his best in October, Gomez was a perfect 6-0 in World Series play.
