Before Yogi Berra, the Yankee corporate image was lightened by Lefty Gomez. Once during a World Series game Gomez infuriated manager Joe McCarthy when the pitcher held up play to watch an airplane flying overhead. And in one of his zanier moments, Gomez quipped, “I’ve got a new invention. It’s a revolving fish bowl for fish that are tired. Zany or not, Gomez was all business when it came to getting out hitters—which he did with frequency.
