The great Hall of Fame left-handed pitcher Carl Hubbell never looked better than in this 1933 Sport Kings PSA 8 that has only been bested by 8 other subjects. The 1933 Sport Kings multi-sport cards issued by the Goudey Gum Company are among the most desirable pre-WWII cardboard collectibles with only 3 baseball players included in the set. Carl Hubbell could have not asked for better company with the other two ballplayers being Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb! Master of the screwball, Hubbell will forever be remembered for his miraculous performance in the 1934 All-Star game when he struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin in succession! Hubbell went on to win 253 games including a record 24 consecutive wins over two seasons. His renowned portrait pose emanates pristine like aesthetics, encompassed by a brilliant powder blue background and four super clean borders. The image is well centered, the perimeter includes four super square corners, and the brief green typography “bio” on the reverse side is affixed to a near flawless surface. Hubbell’s 5 consecutive strikeouts in the All Star game, spectacular as it may be, falls a notch short of the superior eye appeal radiating from this Hubbell Sport Kings masterpiece that might possibly qualify for a half-grade uptick in PSA’s grading system!
