This Lopez is one of our personal favorites. Lopez’s mask flying toward the edge of frame, the ball sailing upward and the great catcher’s focus make this illustration an absolute classic. Lopez earned his fame with his glove, rather than his bat. Only three times did he hit over .275 and his single season home run high was eight. But behind the plate, Lopez was a warrior. With Lopez in the game, passed balls were unthinkable, foul balls were snared from grabbing fans and runners were gunned down with frequency. On defense, Lopez was virtually without peer. A crafty student of the game, Lopez was an outstanding manager and the only skipper to pilot an AL team other than the Yankees to the World Series in the 1950’s -- reaching October play with the Indians in 1954 and the Go-Go Sox in 1959.
