In one of the most underrated trades in baseball history, Branch Rickey sent Rogers Hornsby, near the high point of his career to the Giants in return for Frankie Frisch. The move eliminated the caustic Hornsby from the Cardinals clubhouse and installed perhaps the only man who could have managed the Cardinals cast of Depression-era characters to World Series supremecy in Frisch. College educated, but brash enough to brawl in back alleys, Frisch delivered the tough but fair style of managing needed in baseball’s rough and tumble 1930’s.
