This amazing post card from 1951 shows the great African American stars that propelled the Brooklyn Dodgers to national prominence and National League dominance following the signing of Jackie Robinson.
Pictured are Roy Campanella, Dan Bankhead, Don Newcombe and Jackie Robinson, posing on-field with Lawson Bowman, proprietor of Bowman’s Cocktail Lounge, located at St. Nicholas Place and 155th Street in New York.
Several copies of this popular post card have surfaced in recent years, but relative;y few of these treasured Dodger mementos are known to exist. Bowman’s was a late night hot spot and favorite haunt of most black athletes who passed through New York.
This wonderful image captures a period when America was changing and more and more citizens were realizing that there was nothing equal about the nation’s Separate But Equal segregation policies.
