A football All-American out of Wisconsin, Wilson chose baseball over the NFL after being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. After being dealt to Detroit in 1954, Wilson became the personal catcher for Tigers ace Frank Lary. Lary, known as the "Yankee Killer" had a record of 16-3 against the Bronx Bombers while Wilson was behind the plate. Ironically, Wilson hit .354, nearly 100 points above his lifetime .258 mark, while calling Lary’s games against New York.
