Unitas’ first NFL career pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. From that moment on, Unitas’ passes found the Baltimore end zone on a regular basis. Unitas’ legend was cemented during “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” the 1958 NFL Championship. After guiding the Colts to a tying field goal at the end of regulation, Unitas engineered an 80-yard touchdown drive on the first possession of the first Sudden Death Overtime game in NFL history. As the game continued, prime time TV audiences watched the contest as they tuned in to see their normal Sunday night programming, which was pre-empted by the late running game. Unitas’ performance over the fabled Giants defense helped the NFL gain footing in a baseball dominated world. And changed the face of the game forever.
