Brock set the standard for speed and power before the emergence of Ricky Henderson. Few people remember that Brock was only one of four players in major league history to hit a ball into the bleachers in dead centerfield at the Polo Grounds, some 450+ ft from home plate. The legendary Buck O’Neal brought the talented outfielder to Chicago, but Brock never had the opportunity to star for the Cubs and was ultimately dealt to the Cardinals in mid-season 1964, in what is widely viewed as one of the worst trades in baseball history. Brock hit over .360 after the trade and helped catapult the Cardinals to the World Series. In a little known statistic, including all players to enter the league since 1960, Brock is the leader in triples—although, his total is less than half the all-time record of 307 held by Sam Crawford. Of the 2,400 examples graded by PSA, only two have been graded higher, with only 28 singles graded PSA 9.
