The key to the 1954 Bowman set, the Williams card and the card of outfielder Jimmy Piersall were both printed on card #66. This magnificent Williams is superior to many ’54 Bowmans. For some reason, Bowman chose the cheapest, darkest and unquestionably worst card stock ever used in the modern era for their 1954 set. Most cards appear dark and “flat” as a result of the stock. This Williams example seems to escape many of the pitfalls caused by the poor paper chosen by Bowman’s purchasing department – so we suggest you bid on this card. The grading services look at physical features such as corners, etc. However, they don’t always consider image quality. And you won’t find many ’54 Bowmans with higher quality images than this.
