“Rapid Robert” was slowing down a bit by 1955. The former prodigy and famous flame-thrower could still bring the heat, but wasn’t the pitcher he was almost 20 years earlier. Many feel, rightfully so, that Feller could have been the greatest pitcher of all time if not for his years lost to WWII. But military service was never an issue with Feller. The first professional athlete to enlist following the attack on Pearl Harbor (Feller enlisted on December 8, 1941), Feller always proclaimed that his greatest feat in life happened by protecting democracy, not by playing baseball.
