On January 21, 1960, Stan Musial shocked the world in a move we simply can’t imagine any modern athlete even considering. In 1959, injuries and age seemed to have finally caught up with “The Man” as his offensive production dropped to very un-Musial levels, including a .255 batting average, 14 home runs and only 44 RBI’s in a mere 115 games. Musial earned a Cardinal-record salary of $100,000 in 1959, but felt he “didn’t earn his pay.” So in one of the greatest character moves of all time, the great Stanly Frank Musial approached Cardinals management and demanded a $20,000 pay cut. Still dogged by Father Time, Musial’s numbers gradually inched back up in 1960 and 1961, before he exploded for one last monumental season in 1962.
