Fritz Ackley can tip his cap to Steve Carlton for making his name immortal thanks to this card. A journeyman pitcher who won 95 games in the minors, but only one in the majors, Ackley just wasn’t a major league pitcher. Carlton, on the other hand, stands as the second-winningest lefty of all time. After being traded by the Cardinals to the Phillies in 1972, Carlton turned in one of baseball’s greatest pitching performances, dominating the NL and becoming the only pitcher to win the Cy Young award while pitching for a last place team. Carlton posted 27 of the Phillies 59 total wins that season and won pitching’s Triple Crown.
