Aside from Joe Jackson, there may never be a greater tragedy than Pete Rose in baseball. No player ever gave more effort in every inning of every game than Charlie Hustle. Rose’s trademark head-first slide was the symbol of hard-nosed play for a generation. Yet, all most of us remember now is a tragic figure who broke baseball’s only hard-and-fast rule. You can’t gamble and play the game.
