Fears was the NFL’s first true wide receiver, lining up outside the tackle near the sideline. The speedy end made an immediate impact and in only his second season in 1949, set an NFL record with 77 receptions. The following year, he upped the record to 84. In the 1951 NFL Championship, Fears broke a 17-17 tie late in the fourth quarter, when he rocketed away from the Cleveland defense for a 73-yard touchdown catch. The Hall of Famer was enshrined at Canton in 1970 and is a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1950’s
