The 1908 E102 “Anonymous Candy cards, including 25 subjects, qualify as one of the most condition sensitive card issues in existence. With that in mind, this E102 PSA 4 Otto Knabe is one tough card to obtain at all, let alone in VG-EX condition. Currently, a mere 10 Knabe’s in total have been encapsulated by PSA with NO OTHER examples at this tier and ONLY 3 graded higher (excluding one “7” with a qualifier)! Otto Knabe will never be considered one of baseball’s best 2nd baseman, but the Philadelphia middle infielder’s E102 presented here could easily match up against many other surviving high end candy cards from the “dead ball” era. A spectacular portrait image is affixed to the card, set against a solid dark crimson red background. Clean white borders are centered relatively 50/50 “top to bottom” and 60/40 “right to left”. The edging is sharp and the corners mildly worn. With no major creasing, only two slightly round corners at the top right and lower left prevent this card from achieving “EX” status. As a final compliment to this scarce jewel, the reverse side checklist is vividly registered and no major surface blemishes are evident. Keep in mind that a “VG-EX” E102 is relatively comparable with an “EX-MT” T206! It is that concept that high grade enthusiasts consider when assembling the most difficult “E” cards circulating throughout the cardboard industry, and this E102 Knabe certainly belongs in any advanced vintage collection.
