The E90-1 American Caramel set is recognized by most enthusiasts as “The King” of the candy sets. With a myriad of prominent Hall of Famers, one of those Cooperstown inductees is the Philadelphia Athletics star right handed hurler Albert “Chief” Bender. Presented here is Bender’s E90-1 issue in an outstanding SGC 50/4 holder, with only two other SGC examples graded higher! Author of over 200 victories and four single season E.R.A.’s less than 2.00, Bender was called upon “time after time” by Connie Mack to deliver a crucial World Series win. Overall, Bender did not disappoint his immortal manager, winning 6 World Series games in assisting the A’s in winning three World Championships. His classic pitching pose portrays superb contrast and focus as he delivers another one of his unhittable pitches. A brilliant blend of powder blue, yellow and green hues complete the frame that is centered “dead on”. Sharp square corners and fine edging provide EX-MT quality, and the borders are a strong snow white. The reverse side American caramel bold black print advertisement is vividly registered, set against a super clean white background. With no major creasing, all qualities of this card lean towards a much higher grade. Unfortunately, the technically assigned “VG-EX 4” is due to some diminutive abrasions near the right center border. Any high end collector should jump at the opportunity to seize a cardboard gem that has only been bested by two other cards, and most likely, is aesthetically stronger than both those examples!
