The 1909 E90-1 American Caramel issue is widely renowned as the “king of the candy sets”. To commemorate the 1909 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates club, in 1910 the American Caramel Company of Philadelphia, PA. issued an 11 card set consisting of all Pirate players that is strikingly similar to the famous E90-1 distribution, including the exact same back side advertisement. One of those subjects, 2nd baseman Dots Mailler is presented here in a splendid PSA 4 holder. Currently, only 12 examples have been encapsulated by PSA, with a SOLE other copy at this tier and only 3 graded higher! From 1909 thru 1911, Miller was Honus Wagner’s double play partner, his major “claim to fame”. However, his portrait pose representation on this offering is superb, depicting perfect contrast and clarity, and set against a vibrant unblemished red background. Atypical for E90-2 Caramels, the clean white borders are centered virtually “dead on”, and framed by a perimeter that includes sharp edges and square corners. No major creases are apparent, and the reverse side bold black print typography retains its original luster. Undoubtedly, the overall aesthetics of this scarce gem far exceeds its technically assigned grade, justifying why you should not to let it slip away!
