The 1909 E90-1 American Caramel issue is widely renowned as the “king of the candy sets”. With its beautiful array of colors utilized for 120 different subjects, many elite collectors are obsessed with the challenge of completing a high grade set. Unfortunately, unlike its primary tobacco competitor, the T206 “Monster” set, American Caramel mid-grade + examples are ultra scarce most likely due to the fact that kids handled candy while a majority of tobacco cards were purchased by adults. With that in mind, offered here is one of the set’s most prestigious subjects, the immortal Hall of Fame pitcher CY Young’s Boston Red Sox portrait pose in a breathtaking SGC 80/6 holder! Of the 90+ SGC graded Young’s, a mere 2 others exist at this tier with NONE graded higher! Therefore, this offering shares the distinction of being the best E90-1 copy on the planet! They named an award after the great Cy Young, and this candy card of the legendary right hander, likewise, certainly merits some type of award for high-end cardboard status. Cy Young established the benchmark for all other pitchers to chase. It is unfathomable to think about winning over 500 games in today’s game. To put in perspective, that would mean winning at least 25 games for 20 consecutive seasons! This is why collectors scramble to collect his most eclectic cardboard relics, with this “E” card depiction of him, arguably, the most desirable Cy Young baseball card in existence with respect to a reasonable budget. The overall eye appeal of this museum worthy gem is consistent with the technical grade. A vibrant “fire engine” red background encompasses a clearly registered Carl Horner portrait image, with well centered snow white borders providing a nearly perfect frame. Four relatively square corners only depict a hint of touching and the perimeter edging is sharp. The reverse side American Caramel print advertisement portrays fine clarity and registration, and no creases are evident throughout the card. Of all the E90-1 Cy Young portrait cards we have seen, NONE could possibly surpass the aesthetic brilliance of this one of a kind masterpiece. Adding win# 512 to Cy’s lifetime victory total is an impossibility, but you should try your hardest to win what may be his most popular “E” card that currently stands as the highest graded SGC specimen!
