No baseball card could ever surpass the brilliant artistic designs and color patterns of the highly sought 1911 Turkey Red cabinets. These oversized premiums were obtained by mailing in coupons from Turkey Red, Old Mill and Fez brand cigarettes, and are considered by most vintage card experts as the most attractive and exquisite cards ever produced in our treasured hobby. “Art meets baseball card” as the mesmerizing color schemes and frame like borders come together to create, by far, the closest specimen the cardboard industry has to compare to the world of prestigious fine art. The most sought after Hall of Famer produced in this 100 card baseball set was the legendary Tyrus Raymond Cobb, and it is his T3 Turkey Red masterpiece that we are presenting here in a PSA 1 holder. Ty Cobb’s legacy, simply put, cannot be over emphasized. He is one of the five original Hall of Famers and arguably, one of the top five players in baseball history. Over 4,000 hits, 891 stolen bases, 2,200+ runs scored, 12 A.L. batting titles and, most impressive, baseball’s all-time lifetime hitter with a .367 average easily support the preceding argument. From a card perspective, he ranks with Ruth, Joe Jackson and Wagner as the most highly sought baseball collectible, and his rarities continue to achieve five figures plus. His Turkey Red card, while only a PSA 1, still displays it all…brilliant colors, the picturesque Cobb batting stance that is omnipresent in nature, and art like borders. Regarding aesthetics, this Cobb example is superb and presents far beyond the technical grade. The classic, almost daunting Cobb batting stance is accompanied by a myriad of combined deep and light color patterns that have withstood the test of time, falling nothing short of a recently completed oil painting. Brilliant green, orange, yellow and grey colors perfectly blend to create a timeless portrait, worthy of Cooperstown itself. It staggers the mind that an almost 100 year old production could retain its original luster. The perimeter section of the card is super clean, the edging is fine, and the four corners still reflecting their a majority of their original square shapes. The checklist back is fully intact with vivid print registration and no creasing or wrinkles are evident on both the front and back. So how does a card so aesthetically pleasing receive a “1” grade? Unfortunately, three pinholes (one at the top and two at the bottom borders) are evident, justifying the technical assessment. Luckily for T3 collectors seeking an affordable Ty Cobb, they do not detract the viewer from the outstanding positive attributes throughout the remainder of the card. What could be more impressive than an oversized card of one of baseball’s five original Hall of Famers displayed in a color scheme that surpasses 21st century technology. More impressively, the Turkey Red Cobb is not only one of sport’s cards top 250, but recently categorized as a top 20 cardboard collectible! Bottom line is this historical remnant, aesthetically worthy of induction into baseball’s illustrious Hall of Fame, transcends time to the origin of our National Pastime, providing a desire for even the novice collector to begin investing in early 20th century artifacts such as this most desirable cabinet gem.
