First and foremost, we must apologize for the PSA label that inadvertently categorizes this Ty Cobb American Caramel prize as an E106 specimen. Obviously, due to its reverse side “Baseball Caramel” large print with crossed bats situated near the center of the card, this offering is from the prestigious 1909 E90-1 Caramel set. We have already resubmitted this card to PSA, and its lucky winner will receive the card encapsulated with the correct E90-1 label.
If the T206 Tobacco “Monster Set” is the “Holy Grail” of all pre-WWI sets, then the E90-1 American Caramel set must be the “Mona Lisa”. Considered by most avid collectors as “the king of the candy sets”, many high end enthusiasts scramble to assemble a complete 120 card E90-1 set. Unfortunately, this is now easy task considering that there are many low issue cards as well as some high priced Hall of Famers. As with most pre-WWI tobacco and candy sets, one of the most prominent subjects is the immortal Tyrus Raymond Cobb with his E90-1 specimen offered here in an eye pleasing PSA 2 holder. Any century old card of Ty Cobb is worthy of a place in an esteemed collection. His status as a 1936 charter member of Cooperstown, as well as being one of our National Pastime’s greatest players ever substantiates his mega popularity among advanced enthusiasts. The classic “Georgia Peach” sideways batting poses seen on other vintage issues, is virtually un-improvable. You can almost feel Cobb’s intensity via his pristine facial hues as he prepares to smack another one of his iconic hits. A flawless orange and green background projects his majestic stance to an almost supernatural level, with the image slightly favoring the left edge. With no major creasing evident, four mildly rounded corners account for technical assessment, yet they still depict an eye pleasing uniformity. No major issues with the clean reverse side are the final compliments to an offering with aesthetic appeal beyond its grade. No vintage collection could possibly be considered complete without an E90-1 Ty Cobb memento!
