It doesn’t take a HOF player, nor a high grade limited Population Report for a baseball card to be sort out by advanced collectors. Such is the case with this Bill O’Hara ‘St. Louis’ version T206 that has been graded a SGC 10/1. The prestigious T206 Tobacco set issued from 1909 – 1911 is first renowned for the 4 high end cards to obtain including Wagner, Plank, the Magee error (Magie) and Doyle variation. After these famous four, the two rarest variations are the St. Louis O’Hara and Demmitt versions produced by the Polar Bear cigarette company. After O’Hara was traded from the New York Giants to the St. Louis Browns of the American League, only the Polar Bear company reflected this change in their tobacco issues. All other factory issues printed O’Hara in a New York Giants uniform. Hence, a significant T206 variation was born! While the exact count is unknown, the limited number of St. Louis O’Hara’s now command significant dollars, and are amongst the toughest top ten T206’s to obtain.
This SGC 10/1 O’Hara offering exhibits clear registration and strong contrast for the classic “bat on shoulder” pose. Set against a background consisting of bold blue and soft green colors, the image is well centered and while the four corners are heavily rounded including some layering, they still provide an aesthetically pleasing uniformity. The standard St. Louis version Polar bear back depicts a clear white advertisement print set against a relatively bold blue background. The technical grade is attributed to the aforementioned corners as well as four major diagonal creases that run through O’Hara’s image, apparent on both sides of the card. Fortunately, this creasing does not extinguish the strong quality of O’Hara’s iconic image, and considering its scarcity, the advanced enthusiast is more typically concerned with “the right to own a copy” versus the card’s technical assessment. Bottom line is that many advanced vintage collectors continue to tackle the challenge of trying to build the T206 “Monster Set”. For most, accumulating 520 of the 524 cards is satisfaction that they have, indeed, completed the set. With that in mind, be sure to place the final bid and jump another hurdle towards your quest in completing the iconic T206 set!
