Cepeda was the kind of player you just loved to watch. Ernie Banks may have been the only other player to have smiled more on the field than Cepeda. A perennial All Star, Cepeda had the ability to carry teams for weeks at a time. And his 1967 MVP season with the Cardinals is still talked about in St. Louis, where he turned the Redbirds into the “El Birdos” and had Midwesterners doing the “Cha Cha” in the aisles at Busch Stadium. This Cepeda rookie is a stellar example of how good the ’58 Topps issue can look. The bold background is a perfect compliment to Cepeda’s image--all framed by a dazzlingly white border. It gets no better.
