One of the exciting aspects of card collecting continues to be the vast potential for “variation” finds throughout the hobby. One of those variations relates to the T205 gold border Christy Mathewson “Cycle Cigarette” specimen with all “Cycle Back” Mathewson cards depicting the iconic hurler having a single loss during the 1908 season, inadvertently omitting a “1” since “Matty” actually lost 11 games in 1908. While PSA previously included all “Cycle” Mathewson’s within the total T205 Mathewson count, the illustrious grading company recently created a separate category for the Mathewson Cycle variation. Although this PSA 3 offering happens to be the highest graded specimen, and one of only two examples now indicated under this new Cycle variation category, there are certainly other T205 Cycle Mathewson’s included in the significant number of standard T205 Mathewson graded copies (with some copies graded higher). Regardless, most hobby experts agree that this “Cycle 1 loss” Mathewson merits distinction as one of the “top 5” variations within the prestigious T205 gold border set.
Any pre-WWI card of the iconic Christy Mathewson is worthy of esteem accolades, let alone one that is now categorized as an obscure variation. Mathewson’s 373 wins, 3 shutouts in the 1905 World Series, and “Christian Gentleman” persona have forever earned him status as one of our national Pastime’s greatest pitchers who ever toed the rubber. His classic lithographic portrait pose on this aesthetically pleasing copy is virtually pristine, depicting near perfect contrast and clarity. With no major creasing evident, only some typical gold border chipping near the lower edge and four moderately rounded corners impact the technical assessment. Otherwise, this relatively clean example reflects no major handling abuse, with the reverse side typography for the Mathewson “bio”, 3 year won/lost record and Cycle Cigarette advertisement vividly bold and set against a clean white background. Many of this rare card’s technical qualities are consistent with a mid-grade example, justifying why you should ride this “Big Six” ultra desirable T205 “Cycle 1 loss” variation card directly to the winner’s circle!
