The eccentric Waddell was a pure talent that could have been the greatest pitcher of all time, if not for his lack of concentration. Said one player of the era, “If given the chance to pitch next inning or chase a fire truck, Rube would be runnin’ down the street right now.” Waddell’s 349 strikeouts in 1904 would stand as the single season record for over 60 years, until Sandy Koufax topped the mark in 1965.
