Easily the most coveted card of the post-war era, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle High Number Rookie has reached mythic proportions in terms of card collecting legend. Film stars such as Charlie Sheen and Billy Crystal have scooped up high-grade ’52 Mantles. And the card creates unending chatter whether it is offered at auction, at retail or simply displayed. The allure of this modern relic continues to grow, even as many areas of the hobby consolidate. The 1952 Topps set was printed on a total of six 100-card sheets and issued in six different, consecutively numbered series. The sixth sheet included cards 311-407, the infamous "high-number" series. Sheet number six contained 94 single-printed cards and 3 double-printed cards--#311 Mickey Mantle, #312 Jackie Robinson and #313 Bobby Thomson. Distribution of Topps 1952 High Numbers was spotty at best, with low domestic orders undermining sales. The majority of high numbers, including Mantle rookies, were shipped to Canada, with an even greater number of cases dumped in the Hudson River, by frustrated Topps executives. With this rich history behind it, Goodwin and Company proudly offers the wonderful Topps ’52 Mickey Mantle Rookie, in GOOD 2 condition. Graced with exquisite color, this ’52 still holds much of its original sheen, with mild aging along the borders. Each corner shows a modest touch, with minimal hints of rounding. The heroic Mantle pose is unscathed and unscuffed, providing a rich mix of color, as the great Yankee slugger looks skyward over his shoulder, pondering if he might someday surpass the likes of Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio. For the discerning collector, the ’52 Mantle represents the pinnacle of the hobby, ranking alongside the T206 Wagner, T206 Plank and 1933 Goudey Lajoie as one of the most treasured cardboard classics ever issued. We are available day and evening to answer questions about this extraordinary piece of baseball history. If you have considered moving your collection to the highest level, this spectacular Mantle could serve as a cornerstone for your collection.
