In a world where the word rare is bandied about all too freely, Goodwin and Company proudly brings you a card worthy of the description. The inaugural card of Leaf’s inaugural set depicts none other than the greatest quarterback in Chicago Bears history, Hall of Famer Sid Luckman. Beyond the degradation and condition casualties common to the first card in every set, the ’48 Leaf Luckman Rookie featured multiple variations, the most uncommon of which is the yellow background variation. Of the 89 total Yellow Background variations known, a mere eight grade at the level of NM or above, with only five PSA 7’s and three PSA 8’s known. No Leaf Luckman card has ever graded above a PSA 8.
In our estimation, the card barley misses the PSA 8 grade and would be a worthy candidate for re-grade, with at least a score of 7.5 very likely. Upon careful examination, this Luckman Rookie excels with vibrant color, as bold as the day it was first printed. The borders gleam intensely, without the dulling so common to both the ’48 Leaf football and baseball sets. The most insignificant of touches are visible at the corners. A modest hint of handling at the upper left corner is also visible. As for Leaf’s greatest sin, registration, this Luckman passes with flying colors. For the football purist, the advanced collector, or the investor, this gem from the post-War boom provides a significant opportunity to add one of the most difficult to obtain high-grade cards to your collection.
