Parent had a knack of being in the center of everything in big games. He was Boston’s shortstop during the first World Series. He was the batter when Jack Chesbro sailed his wild pitch in the season’s final game in 1904. He made incredible plays that saved four no-hitters including Cy Young’s perfect game. He denied three pitchers no-hitters, slapping the only hit in each game. And he drove in the only run in Frank Smith’s no-hitter in the bottom of the 9th, by reaching for a pitch that was intended to be part of an intentional walk. Parent may not be a household name, but his name is prominent in early baseball history.
