Young’s rubber arm was still filled with pitches when he retired. The problem was that his waistline was filled, perhaps overfilled, to the degree that he could no longer field his position. Had the great pitcher controlled his weight, it’s perceivable that he could have gone on to pitch another five years and won his 600th game.
