No baseball card collection can be considered complete without a vintage pre-WWI card of the incomparable Ty Cobb, and no affordable Ty Cobb cardboard memento could possibly be more renowned and desirable than the iconic T206 red portrait Cobb reflecting the majestic Carl Horner portrait Cobb image. It is this top ten hobby jewel that is presented here in a spectacular PSA 6 holder. PSA has encapsulated almost 1,200 “Red Portrait” Cobb’s with a mere 5% graded higher. More significantly, this is the SOLE PSA Polar Bear “Red Portrait” Cobb at this tier with only a single example graded higher (of course, this data excludes the “unknown” T206 Cobb’s with unidentified backs). Still holder of the highest major league lifetime batting average, Ty Cobb is arguably one of the top 5 ballplayers of all-time, and is a 1936 charter member of baseball’s renowned Hall of Fame. This is why many enthusiasts look to augment their collections with “turn of the century” Cobb keepsakes with NONE more hallowed than the historic red portrait T206 Ty Cobb. His classic headshot portrays outstanding facial colored hues with slight “off-focus” registration. The entire Carl Horner pose is set against a super clean red background, and the entire image is well centered between four white borders. Strong square corners and sharp edging form a superior perimeter, and only a diminutive “spec” along the lower right border may have kept this card from achieving the exalted near mint technical assessment. The tougher “Polar Bear” tobacco brand advertisement is virtually pristine, with the vividly registered white text encompassed by a bold midnight blue background. To reiterate, the overall eye appeal of this highly desirable artifact is outstanding; a 100 year relic that exhibits a myriad of “pack fresh” qualities. Bottom line is this representation of the legendary Cobb symbolizes early 20th century baseball, and ‘turns back the clock’ to an era when the game evolved as America’s pastime. Don’t hesitate in seeking out this brilliant high grade representation of the immortal “Georgia Peach”!
