The 1910 E98 “Anonymous Candy cards including 30 subjects are considered one of the most condition sensitive card issues in existence which is why this E98 PSA 5 representation of Hall of Famer Fred Clarke is one of the finest high end “E” cards circulating in the hobby. Currently, only 4 other PSA copies exist at this tier with a SOLE example graded higher! Substantiating the absolute paucity of any high grade E98 specimen, consider that PSA has encapsulated over 500 of the total 30 subjects with only 7% surpassing an “EX 5” grade! Clarke ended his stellar 21 year career with a .312 lifetime batting average, playing for both the Louisville Colonels and Pittsburgh Pirates. In addition, he managed both those clubs from 1897 – 1915, racking up over 1,600 wins and serving as the immortal Honus Wagner’s manager most of his career. His outstanding throwing pose is portrayed in sparkling blue and gray colored hues, set against a stunning powder blue background. The well centered image is encompassed by four dazzling white borders, no obtrusive surface flaws are evident, the corners are relatively square and the reverse side checklist depicts fine print registration. At first glance, we were completely perplexed as to why this card didn’t achieve “at least” an “EX-MT” technical assessment. However, under further scrutiny, miniscule enamel loss was identified near the lower right border as well as a diminutive diagonal surface abrasion near checklist#28. These two microscopic type flaws do not under any circumstances impede the breathtaking aesthetics provided by this high end obscurity. With eye appeal beyond its assigned grade, any vintage high grade set collector would easily find a home for this virtually unequivocal E98 specimen!
