Wheat can lay claim to helping bring the knuckleball to the game. While facing Cubs rookie Larry Cheney, Wheat drilled a devastating drive through the box, striking Cheney’s pitching hand as he tried to block the screaming liner. The ball broke Cheney’s thumb and nose. As a result, Cheney was forced to try an unconventional grip and the floater was born. Wheat probably wasn’t thrilled with the outcome.
