Babe Ruth is not only the greatest baseball player ever, but arguably, the most popular domineering athlete in world history. Both his unfathomable records and off the field charisma governed baseball for two decades, more than any athlete ever dominated their respective sport. Past, present and future, his name is linked to an iconic stature reserved for history’s storied figures such as Washington, Lincoln, Churchill, Stalin, etc. It is with no surprise that advanced enthusiasts scramble to garnish his most desirable artifacts including game used memorabilia, autographs and baseball cards. Regarding his cardboard relics there are certainly a myriad to choose from, with NONE more desirable than any of the four Goudey subjects included in their “World Renowned” 1933set. For all of the aforementioned reasons, the Goudey Gum Co. choose to issue four separate Babe Ruth subjects in their prestigious 239 card set. With that in mind, we are proud to present the ultra desirable #149 “batting/red background” Babe Ruth Goudey gum card in a spectacular PSA 7 holder. So why is the great “Bambino” so popular? What makes him baseball’s “crème of the crop” immortal all-time player? Simply put, a significant number of his 714 home runs came when TEAMS didn’t hit 50 in a season! Before he was clouting balls into Yankee Stadium’s upper deck, he was manhandling batters as a Boston Red Sox ace left-handed hurler, and had he continued pitching, he would undoubtedly been enshrined in Cooperstown as one of the best hurlers of all-time. Maybe it was his obsession with children who he loved whole-heartedly to the extent of signing baseballs for them countless of hours after games. Add in his incomparable persona and you have your answer. Furthermore, this is why a myriad of collectors are obsessed with seizing his prized cards and NONE could possibly be more desirable than a high grade Goudey specimen. Ruth’s half-body swinging image is a testament to his immortality as he watches another mighty wallop sail towards the grandstands. The solid red/orange hued background projects Ruth’s might swing in a “3-D” like format, with the image well centered “side to side” and the vertical centering slightly favoring the lower border. Both the obverse and reverse side surfaces are as near perfect as the sweet spot of Ruth’s bat connecting with a horsehide sphere. The edging is as sharp as the break on his curveball when he was dominating World Series hitters to the tune of 29 consecutive scoreless innings. The reverse bold green print registration still retains its original luster, set against a clean white background. While the corners have managed to sustain most of their original right angle formation, some peripheral touching prevents this card from achieving “near mint” status. Nevertheless, we cannot imagine many “EX-MT” Goudey Ruth’s providing the stellar aesthetics radiating from this superb offering that, like the “Babe” himself, places an indelible mark on the card collecting circuit!
