Masterpieces and Uncommon Commons XXIX

Every player of the period always said that you could hear Johnson’s pitches coming. You couldn’t always see them because of their speed. But you could always hear the whistle from “The Big Train.” Johnson’s numbers defy anything contemporary pitchers can imagine. Of all the records in baseball, the two most unapproachable are Cy Young’s 511 wins and Walter Johnson’s 110 shutouts. No modern pitcher will ever throw 110 complete games, so shutouts aren’t even in the picture.
