As a coach, Craig was the master of teaching the split finger fastball. In 1984, he taught the pitch to Willie Hernandez who was the difference maker out of the bullpen for the World Champion Tigers. In 1985, he taught the pitch to Mike Scott, who would win the Cy Young award with the pitch. And pupil Jack Morris was one of the most dominant pitchers of the 80’s and 90’s using the pitch.
