What more can be said about the great Pirate shortstop John Peter Wagner, more commonly known as “Hans” or “Honus” and what he has meant to the baseball memorabilia industry, particularly with regards to vintage cardboard artifacts. There isn’t a serious card collector that hasn’t pursued adding a high end vintage Wagner card to their inventory. Whether it his status as the greatest shortstop who ever played the game, his induction into Cooperstown as one of The five original Hall of Fame inductees, or simply the myth behind his world renowned T206 gem, Wagner continues to be a baseball card icon. While no card can nearly approach the hype and desirability of his T206, there are several other rarities that advanced collectors actively seek including various ‘E’ card issues. One of these rarities is the E94 George Close Candy issue, which we proudly offer in a splendid PSA 1 holder.
If it has not been for the diminutive pinhole situated approximately ¼” above Wagner’s cap, this card would have achieved a solid “VG” technical assessment. The overall aesthetics of this offering are superb staring with an outstanding Wagner batting stance pose ONLY portrayed with the E94 issue as “Hans” prepares to stroke another one of his 3,000+ hits. The eclectic Wagner batting illustration is set against a fine gold background, one of the more obscure E94 color backgrounds to locate, and the image portrays near perfect centering between four lightly toned borders. While the corners reflect rounding edges typically evident on any century old card, the even wear actually results in a super eye pleasing uniformity. A minor surface crease is evident near the right order directly above Wagner’s left elbow, and a “spec” like etching anomaly is situated about ¼” from the pinhole. The reverse side checklist is completely intact and free of any obtrusive flaws, save the aforementioned pinhole. Of all the candy/”E” card Wagner issues, this one may be his most desirable. The George Close Candy set provides the collector with an excellent balance of being somewhat scarce, yet attainable in the event the hobbyist chooses to build the entire set. Regardless, of greater significance is simply seizing the opportunity to own such a classic card with overall eye appeal far outdistancing the assigned grade!
