The “dead-ball” era produced many of Cooperstown’s current inductees, and one of the mosrt heralded of those are any of the three members of baseball’s iconic Chicago Cub’s double play combination: “Tinker to Evers to Chance”. That formidable three assisted Chicago in winning 3 consecutive pennants from 1906 – 1908 along with two World Series victories over Ty Cobb’s Detroit Tigers in 1907 and 1908. It is not surprising, therefore, that when the American Tobacco Company (ATC) issued there prestigious T206 tobacco card series, four separate cards/poses of the Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Tinker were included between 1909 and 1911. With that in mind, presented here is the popular “hands on knees” version in a spectacular PSA 8 holder. Regarding the colossal T206 “Monster Set”, a significantly low percentage of the entire PSA population has been fortunate enough to receive the seldom surfacing “NM-MT 8” grade, solidified by only 1.9% of the 127,000+ examples achieving this hallowed stature. This astonishing offering is 1 of 2 “Sweet Cap” copies identified on the PSA “Pop” chart with NONE graded higher. Furthermore, a mere 3 other examples exist at this tier in the “Unknown Backs” category, and NOT A SINGLE T206 Tinker “hands on knees” version, regardless of its back advertisement, has been graded higher by PSA!
Near-impossible to find at this lofty grade, Tinker’s brilliant “hands on knees” pose is virtually flawless, emanating a vivid array of gray colored uniform hues that are set against a sparkling yellow, orange and green background. The image is well centered between four absolutely dazzling white borders, all four corners are razor sharp and no surface blemishes are evident. The reverse side “Sweet Caporal Cigarettes 150 Subjects” advertisement has incredibly retained all of its original red bold typography, and is set against a seemingly flawless bright white surface. PSA has currently encapsulated over approximately 325 Joe Tinker “hands on knees”, and it is unimaginable that any of them could possibly boast the unparalleled aesthetics radiating from this T206 gem. With only four other specimens fortunate enough to achieve a similar technical assessment grade and NONE graded higher, this offering easily suffices as one of the premier T206 cards in the hobby!
