Building a high-grade T206 set is no simple task significantly due to monetary constraints coupled with locating the myriad of T206 subjects in high-grade holders. A seemingly countless number of existing T206 specimens have only achieved mid-grade technical assessments or less. Consider that PSA has encapsulated over 127,000 T206 cards, with a mere 2% of that total achieving a “NM-MT 8” or higher grade. With that in mind, presented here is a magnificent PSA 8 T206 card of the Detroit Tigers right-handed hurler Ed Summers that is the SOLE and highest graded “Piedmont Cigarettes” card listed on the illustrious PSA “Pop” Chart! While the “unknown backs” category does reflect two “Mint 9” specimens, we cannot say with any certainty what advertisement backs those highest graded examples carry. Summers played only 5 seasons in the Majors, winning 24 games in his 1908 rookie season with Detroit, and adding 2 more victories against Connie Mack’s A’s in the World Series. Fortunately for Summers, this grandeur T206 offering secures him a place in cardboard immortality. A pristine pitching image is set against a bright blue and green hues background with the entire illustration only slightly favoring the right edge. Strong right angle corners, sharp edging and a super clean surface complete the outstanding obverse side with the bold mid-night blue “Piedmont 350 Subjects” back affixed to a bright white surface. Ultra-scarce at this near impossible grade, any serious T206 enthusiast should go the distance in placing the final bid on this scant high-grade T206 Summers that will certainly find a permanent home in one of the finest tobacco collections!
