The E90-1 American Caramel set is recognized by most enthusiasts as “The King” of the candy sets. With a myriad of prominent Hall of Famers and stars, the most heralded Cooperstown inductees happens to be the Detroit Tiger’s immortal outfielder Tyrus Raymond Cobb, presented here in a solid SGC 40/3 holder. Of the 87 examples encapsulated by SGC, only 11% have currently exceeded this offering! The “Georgia Peach” is one of baseball’s five original Hall of Fame inductees, and arguably, the greatest “5 tool” player in major league history. His .367 lifetime batting is still the highest figure ever achieved, and will most likely never be bested. Adding to his legacy was his overall vitality, playing each and every game as if it was his last, undoubtedly leaving him as the finest competitor the game has ever seen. Every E90-1 and Ty Cobb enthusiast yearns to add this hobby keepsake to their collection. What better Cobb cardboard relic to own than one that portrays a spectacular batting image of him, as does this presented example. His batting pose depicts superior contrast with no apparent surface flaws, set against a soft eye pleasing background consisting of orange and green hues. With the exception of the top right corner that is moderately round, the remaining corners still retain a majority of their original square shape. The edging is intact, and no major creases are evident. The typography on both sides is bold and vivid, with all of the technical qualities consistent with the mid-grade assessment. Based on SGC’s census reporting, a 3/vg grade amounts to a high end grade since only 13 examples have bested this offering. With that in mind, bid strong and take home one of Ty Cobb’s most sought after pre-WWI candy cards.
