Gandil was the ringleader in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal and was banned from baseball in 1921. A hard-nosed player, Gandil ran away from home at age 17 to play baseball along the Arizona-Mexico border. He supplemented his income by boxing in local heavy-weight fights where he earned a handsome $150 per bout. Few Gandil cards exist, making this T206 a favorite of both collectors and baseball historians.
