1954 was a tough year for the Splendid Splinter. He broke his collarbone diving for a ball during Spring Training. When he returned, well, he was Ted Williams. The Splendid Splinter hit .345 in only 386 at-bats, but was also walked 136 times. Today, that would have won Williams the batting title. But in 1954, winning the title required a specified number of at-bats, not plate appearances as the rule reads today.
