Even though the ’55 Topps is Killebrew’s rookie card, the Senators and Twins great didn’t become a full time starter until 1959. The soft-spoken slugger would go on to lead the league in homers in 1959, bashing 42 – the first of eight seasons he would top the 40 mark. Senators scouts didn’t discover Killebrew, an actual Senator did. An Idaho Senator recommended a young Killebrew to a member of the Washington Senators front office and soon thereafter, the team signed the big first baseman, just days after his 18th birthday.
