For the advanced collector, we proudly offer one of the hallmarks of the hobby. The T206 Ty Cobb Red Background Portrait represents one of the defining cards of all sports collecting. Understanding Cobb’s importance and status within the game, American Tobacco officials took great care in having his images reproduced, and demanded that only the finest illustrators work on Cobb’s artwork. Furthermore, understanding the proliferation of smokers in the South and Cobb’s ties to the Southern United States, the presentation of the “Georgia Peach” was of the utmost importance. Today, few of us stop to consider that when the T206 set was first released, just over 50 years had passed since the Civil War. In fact, Civil War veterans were still alive at the time of the set’s release. So players with Southern roots and players from Southern Association teams were given special consideration, because the South marked a huge portion of the tobacco giant’s market. This beautifully preserved artifact from Cobb’s early days has survived the test of time in glorious fashion. The deep red background behind Cobb glows elegantly without the slightest hint of fading. Every stitch and every line along Cobb’s uniform shows brilliantly, thanks to perfect registration. The card’s borders and corners are razor sharp. An 80/20 cut side-to-side narrows the card’s grade; but make no mistake, this Cobb is nothing short of fabulous. For the Cobb enthusiast or pre WWI collector, Cobb cards of this magnitude command more than just premium prices. They command respect.
