Dropo turned down an offer from “Papa Bear” George Halas to play football in Chicago and signed with the Boston Red Sox. The 1950 Rookie of the Year, Dropo hit .322 with 34 homers and a league high 144 RBI’s as a freshman. He never again approached those numbers but remained a crowd favorite at Fenway and later in Comiskey Park, while playing for the White Sox.
