No serious vintage gathering could possibly be considered complete without the T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait subject included as one of the collections premier pieces. When you think of the hobby’s foremost cards, other than a handful such as the T206 Wagner, 1933 Lajoie and 1952 Mantle Topps issues, the Cobb Red Portrait keepsake is one of the first that comes to mind. When Carl Horner began taking portrait photos of a myriad of baseball stars at the turn of the century, little did he realize that these images would become the backbone of the cardboard hobby with NONE more imposing than Cobb’s timeless pose. Coupled with the desirability to seize the most prestigious T206 subjects is the concept of attaining associated rare ad backs. To say the least, the T206 advertisement frenzy has reached a pinnacle level, substantiating why this PSA 3 T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait offering with an obscure “Tolstoi” Cigarette ad back easily suffices as one of the tobacco collecting community’s most coveted cards. A “1 of 1”, PSA’s population report only lists 4 other specimens in a higher grade and only 12 total examples within the “Tolstoi” ad back category!
No one can possibly deny Cobb’s unequivocal place in baseball history via his incredible batting exploits and unparalleled competitive spirit that is synonymous with his stoic Carl Horner portrait image gracing this majestic offering. Scintillating resolution, a strikingly bold red backdrop, fine centering and a vividly registered “Tolstoi Cigarettes” ad back elevate this card’s aesthetics far beyond the assigned grade. With no glaring surface flaws evident on either side, the moderately rounded corners are the primary culprit for the “VG” assessment that is far less prevalent than the seldom surfacing Ty Cobb/Tolstoi Cigarettes world class combination!
